Apas Sūkta - Hymn to the Apānāptṛ (Apas)

मन्त्र 1

अधुक्षित होता प्रथमः स्वपा अग्नये मरुद्भिश्चेकितानः । स इद्धो अग्निः समिधा विवाधेऽपाम् गर्भं दधत ओषधीषु ॥

adhukṣata hotā prathamaḥ svapā agnaye marudbhiścekitānaḥ । sa iddho agniḥ samidhā vivādhe'pām garbhaṃ dadhata oṣadhīṣu ॥

अनुवाद: The first priest, accomplished in works, has milked for Agni, shining brilliantly with the Maruts. Kindled by fuel, that Agni has spread, placing the embryo of the waters in the plants.

The hymn opens by praising the divine fire (Agni) and Apānāptṛ, the golden force that dwells hidden within the cosmic waters and plants, sustaining all life.

मन्त्र 2

यस्मै विमातरौ जनुषी सुजाते पुरू सदंसि पयसा विवर्ताम् । हिरण्यवर्णो अपामनक्त्येषोऽन्योऽन्यस्मिन्नाधुक्षत प्र पेयम् ॥

yasmai vimātarau januṣī sujāte purū sadāṃsi payasā vivartām । hiraṇyavarṇo apāmanaktyeṣo'nyo'nyasminnādhukṣata pra peyam ॥

अनुवाद: For whom the two well-born mothers (Heaven and Earth) manifest diverse abodes with milk. Golden-hued, he anoints the waters; one increases the drink in another.

The golden-colored deity of the waters is described as being nurtured by cosmic principles, spreading nourishment and clarity across creation.
