📖 Immersive narrative, word breakdowns, and spiritual context

In this opening movement, the Ṛṣi calls upon Indra not merely as a distant deity, but as an active, dynamic companion in the daily spiritual battle of life. The seeker prays for that supreme, victorious wealth which conquers obstacles and remains steadfast under pressure. Indra is invoked to help crush the opposing forces of darkness, symbolized by Vṛtra, using the inner strength and divine equipment he provides. Through unison with Indra and his invincible heroes, the seeker prepares to overcome all hostile forces. This is not a prayer for passive comfort, but an active alignment with the divine warrior principle within. The 'fist-blow' and the 'vajra' represent focused spiritual intensity and the concentrated will that shatters inertia. By taking hold of Indra's power, the seeker transforms ordinary human effort into a cosmic victory over ignorance and limitation.

💭 Flowing Translation

Verse 1: Bring to us, O Indra, the winning, victorious, and ever-enduring wealth, the highest treasure for our protection.

Verse 2: By means of this fierce blow, aided by you and riding our swift steed, may we beat down and subdue all obstructing foes.

Verse 3: O Indra, upheld by your protection, may we grasp the massive thunderbolt and conquer our rivals in battle.

Verse 4: O Indra, united with you as our invincible hero and companion, may we overcome all who attack us.

📝 Scholar's Reading Note

The translation adopts both Sāyaṇa's ritual-martial interpretation and Sri Aurobindo's psychological reading where the 'battle' and 'enemies' represent inner psychological hurdles and spiritual obstacles overcome by divine light.

📖 Immersive narrative, word breakdowns, and spiritual context

Having established the dynamic alliance with Indra, the Ṛṣi steps back to contemplate the sheer immensity of the god. Indra’s greatness is compared to the vast expanse of the sky (Dyauḥ), stretching beyond all normal bounds. Whether people gather in assemblies or sages yearn for divine insight with prayerful minds, all look to this immense reservoir of power.

💭 Flowing Translation

Verse 5: Great is Indra, and indeed ever supreme let his majesty be as the wielder of the thunderbolt; in breadth, his power is like the sky itself.

Verse 6: Whom the men reach out to in the assembly for the acquisition of offspring, or the wise sages thirsting for wisdom.

Verse 7: Whose belly, the supreme drinker of Soma, swells like the ocean, vast as the flowing waters from the mouth of springs.

📝 Scholar's Reading Note

Sāyaṇa interprets 'kukṣi' literally as Indra's capacity to hold vast quantities of Soma, while esoteric commentators view the ocean-like belly as the cosmic infinite reservoir of bliss and divine delight.

📖 Immersive narrative, word breakdowns, and spiritual context

The Sūkta culminates in a stunning image of natural abundance and immediate grace. Indra's bounty is like a fruit-laden, dripping branch ready to be harvested by the sincere worshipper. The Ṛṣi affirms that these divine protections and delightful hymns belong naturally to Indra, inviting the final pouring of the Soma draught. Here, the relationship between human and divine reaches its sweetest expression. Worship is not a transaction of fear, but the joyous gathering of ripe fruits from a tree planted by divine grace itself.

💭 Flowing Translation

Verse 8: Even so indeed is his rich, flowing, cattle-laden, and great inspired word, like a ripe branch to the worshipper.

Verse 9: Even so, O Indra, are your manifold protections and manifestations, immediately present even now for the worshipper like me.

Verse 10: Even so are the desirable hymns, the spoken praises, and the praises fittingly addressed to Indra for his Soma-drinking.

📝 Scholar's Reading Note

The imagery of the 'ripe branch' (pakvā śākhā) is traditionally praised by commentators as one of the most vivid metaphors for the spontaneous descent of divine grace upon the sincere seeker.
