These verses establish the foundational dynamic between the human seeker and the divine flame of Agni. As the fire is kindled, it represents the awakening of divine consciousness within the human heart. The offering of ghṛta (clarified butter) symbolizes the surrender of our refined emotional and mental energies to the higher self. In the second verse, the metaphor of the 'thread' (tantu) represents the uninterrupted lineage of tradition, sacrifice, and spiritual practice. The seeker prays not merely for material wealth such as cattle and brave progeny, but for the ultimate attainment of amṛtatva (immortality).
Verse 1: Offer oblation to the radiant, all-knowing Agni who is being kindled.
Verse 2: Extending the thread of sacrifice, may we attain immortality.
Sāyaṇa interprets these verses primarily through the lens of ritual sacrifice (yajña) and the specific offerings made by the adhvaryu priest. Sri Aurobindo and psychological commentators view Agni as the inner will and aspiration that transmutes lower impulses into divine illumination.
