The seeker approaches the divine flame with deep humility and determination. By invoking Agni as Vratapati (Lord of vows), the seeker acknowledges that spiritual resolve cannot be sustained by ego alone, but requires divine grace and inner purification. Transitioning from untruth to truth is depicted as a deliberate ritual and psychological journey.
Verse 1: Approaching the Lord of Vows for truth.
Sayana interprets vrata as ritual sacrifice, while Sri Aurobindo sees it as the psychological dedication to divine law (rita).

samidhā agniṃ duvasyata ghṛtairbodhayata atithim । āsmin havyā juhotana ॥
Agni is addressed as an honoured guest (atithi) arriving in the human dwelling of the heart. The fuel and clarified butter represent mental focus and pure emotions offered to elevate consciousness.
Verse 2: Nourishing the inner fire with pure offerings.
Ritually, this describes preparing the fire altar; spiritually, it symbolizes tending the flame of awareness.
