In these foundational verses, Agni is invoked not merely as terrestrial fire, but as the cosmic principle of light, purity, and universal vitality. The seer recognizes Agni's presence in the daily rhythms of life and in the conscious devotion of humanity, which feeds the inner flame of spiritual aspiration. Furthermore, Agni is identified with the cosmic sacrifice itself. He is the divine priest (Hotṛ) who bridges the gap between mortal existence and immortal divinity, ensuring that human offerings and aspirations reach the higher realms.
Verse 1: Thou, O Agni, shining by day, swift, pure, and radiant, art nourished by the aspirations of humanity.
Verse 2: Thou art the sacrifice and the universal life, the swift messenger whom mortals worship.
Literally, these verses praise the sacrificial fire; symbolically, Sāyaṇa and Aurobindo interpret Agni as the inner divine Will and consciousness guiding the spiritual seeker.
