The seeker establishes a solemn connection with Agni, pledging to adhere to spiritual vows. By invoking Agni as Vrataspati, the lord of sacred discipline, the human soul aligns its will with cosmic law, ensuring steadfastness in spiritual practice. The physical act of adding fuel and butter symbolizes the inner dedication of one's ego and mental faculties into the flame of divine consciousness.
Verse 1: Approaching Agni for vow fulfillment and truth.
Sāyaṇa interprets these verses strictly as ritual injunctions for the animal and soma sacrifices, whereas Sri Aurobindo sees 'Agni' as the psychological Will and Flame of aspiration within man.
