iṣe tvā ūrje tvā vāyavaḥ stha devo vaḥ savitā prārpayatu śreṣṭhatamāya karmaṇe
Verses 1, 2
इषे त्वा ऊर्जे त्वा वायवः स्थ देवो वः सविता प्रार्पयतु श्रेष्ठतमाय कर्मणे
iṣe tvā ūrje tvā vāyavaḥ stha devo vaḥ savitā prārpayatu śreṣṭhatamāya karmaṇe
अग्नये त्वा जुष्टं गृहामीमं यज्ञं पातु विश्वतस्पातूष्मणे स्वाहा
agnaye tvā juṣṭaṃ gṛhāmīmaṃ yajñaṃ pātu viśvataspātūṣmaṇe svāhā
These opening verses establish the fundamental psychological and ritual attitude of the Yajus. The devotee touches the sacred material with the profound recognition of divine sustenance (iṣe tvā) and inner vigor (ūrje tvā). By invoking Savitur and Agni, the seeker aligns human action with cosmic divine impulses. In the spiritual dimension, these mantras remind the seeker that every physical action, especially one dedicated to the divine, must be purified of egoistic desires and consecrated as an offering to the supreme cosmic order.
Verse 1: For refreshment and energy, you are consecrated by the divine impulsion.
Verse 2: Accepted for Agni, may the all-protecting Lord safeguard the sacrifice.
Literally, these refer to the preparation of sacrificial grass and vessels. Symbolically, Sāyaṇa interprets them as preparing the mind and senses, while Sri Aurobindo views Agni and Savitur as inner psychological forces driving the upward evolution of consciousness.
