Rigveda Mandala 2 Sukta 42

मन्त्र 1

यः श्येनो गृध्रो दधिते वनस्वति वयांसि विश्वा वि च चष्ट उक्षितः। शकुने भद्रया वाच कृपया शंस्येन वाजं जित्स्यन्त्समथो नः शंस

yaḥ śyeno gṛdhro dadhite vanasvati vayāṁsi viśvā vi ca caṣṭa ukṣitaḥ | śakune bhadrayā vāca kṛpayā śaṁsyena vājaṁ jitsyantsamatho naśaṁsa

अनुवाद: He who, like a hawk or vulture, rests upon the tree, all-seeing and nourished; O bird, with auspicious and gracious voice, grant us victory in battle.

The rishi addresses the bird resting on the tree, seeking its auspicious cry as a sign of forthcoming success.

मन्त्र 2

मा त्वा तेन वैर्यो मा वनो विरन्मा त्वा श्येनो अर्चिषा वि ध्यक्षत्। मा त्वा कश्चित्प्र मृषद्बभ्रु रोरुदत्सुक्षेत्रा सो अपां सन्तु गोदाः

mā tvā tena vairyo mā vano viranmā tvā śyeno arciṣā vi dhyakṣat | mā tvā kaścitpra mṛṣadbabhru rorudatsukṣetrā so apāṁ santu godāḥ

अनुवाद: Let not the enemy harm you, let not the forest wound you. Let not the hawk scorch you with its splendor. May no one hurt you, O brown one.

A prayer of protection for the sacred bird from natural and human dangers.
