In this opening movement, the seer introduces Agni not merely as the physical flame on the sacrificial altar, but as the cosmic seed and embryo hidden within all creation. He is found in the waters, in the forests, and within every moving and stationary creature. This omnipresence establishes Agni as the conscious link between the human realm and the divine ordinances, knowing the secret births of both gods and mortals. As the universal embryo (garbha), Agni holds within himself the potentiality of the entire universe. The Ṛṣi marvels at how this single, brilliant force permeates every layer of existence, holding the blueprint of cosmic order (vratā) and guiding human destiny with acute awareness.
Verse 1: May we attain through our devotion all abundant treasures, O Agni, whose flame is brilliant and who encompasses all things.
Verse 2: He is the one who perceives all divine laws and the very birth of the mortal race.
Verse 3: He is the embryo of the waters, the embryo of the forests, the embryo of things stationary and things moving.
The translation adheres closely to both Sāyaṇa's ritualistic interpretation of Agni as the fire present in waters (lightning/submarine fire) and plants, and Sri Aurobindo's psychological view of Agni as the inner divine flame of aspiration inherent in all forms of life.

Here, Agni is depicted as the immortal guest who takes up residence within human dwellings and even within the hard stone (when kindled via friction). He is the wise, thoughtful benefactor who watches over nights and days, bestowing treasures upon those who approach him with well-crafted praises and sincere devotion. The Ṛṣi emphasizes Agni's capacity to protect and nourish both gods and mortals. Because he knows the secret origins of all beings, he acts as the great mediator, ensuring that the cosmic rhythm is maintained across generations of human existence.
Verse 4: Even within the hard stone and within the human household he dwells, immortal, wise, and all-pervading like the common folk.
Verse 5: For he is the night-shining lord of riches who rewards those who worship him with fine hymns.
Verse 6: Knowing all these things, O wise Agni, protect the birth of the gods and of mortals alike.
Verse 7: Whom many changing nights nourish, along with the chariot of the stationary world, sanctified by truth.
Sāyaṇa interprets 'adrau' as the churning stones used to produce fire. The esoteric interpretation views the stone as the hard material mind which, when churned by spiritual practice, reveals the inner light.

The final movement exalts Agni in his high ritual and cosmic function as the divine Hotṛ (priest), seated in the highest realm (svaḥ), executing all true and effective works. Tributes and praises are offered to him from the forests and the pastures, as all beings bring their offerings to this central flame. Finally, Agni is praised as a fierce, charging warrior in battles and a swift archer. He is approached by humanity just as an aging father is approached by his children, depending entirely on his strength, speed, and unwavering protection.
Verse 8: Established is the divine priest, seated in the highest heaven, accomplishing all true and effective works.
Verse 9: In the cattle-stalls and in the forests you place praise, while all bring tribute to you as their light.
Verse 10: Men everywhere pay homage to you on all sides, and take away your wealth like that of an aged father.
Verse 11: Like a greedy hawk, like a hero shooting arrows, like a fierce and formidable charger in the clashes of battle.
Traditional commentators highlight the martial metaphors in verse 11 as proof of Agni's role in defeating inner and outer adversaries. Modern translators view these similes as capturing Agni's relentless, darting flames that consume obstacles with predatory precision.
