In these opening verses, the Ṛṣi introduces Agni not merely as a physical flame, but as the dynamic, restless cosmic force that awakens the universe from its slumber. Agni shines forth, approaching the heavenly realms, banishing the enveloping darkness, and setting the steady motion of stationary and moving creatures alike. He is the restless, brilliant energy that penetrates the deepest shadows. Furthermore, the poet elevates Agni to the supreme status among the gods. By his innate greatness and majesty, he alone stands out as the singular, guiding divine light among all the radiant powers of the cosmos. The verses invite us to perceive the divine fire as the foundational ordering principle that unifies all celestial and terrestrial existence.
Verse 1: Shining forth, the eager Agni approached heaven, unveiling both the stationary and the moving, and rolling back the dark veils of night.
Verse 2: When by his own majesty he alone becomes the supreme God over all the other shining deities, presiding over the cosmic order.
The translation adheres closely to Sāyaṇa's interpretation, where Agni is viewed as the supreme deity manifested through cosmic heat and illumination, while Sri Aurobindo sees Agni here as the divine Will that breaks through the night of ignorance.

Here, the Ṛṣi marvels at the miraculous birth of Agni. Out of the dry, inert friction of the wood—the 'dry' or unmanifest state—springs the living, conscious divine flame. Immediately, all the cosmic powers delight in his divine will, recognizing in him the true pattern of sacred action. All the universal gods embrace this divine identity, treading the path of Ṛta (Truth and Cosmic Order) with their magnificent strides. Agni's impulses and deep inspirations become the very heartbeat of existence. Through him, all living beings and cosmic forces fulfill their appointed tasks in seamless alignment with the eternal law.
Verse 3: Then indeed all the gods took delight in your divine will, O Agni, when you were born as a living spirit from the dry wood.
Verse 4: All the gods partake in your divine nature, sustaining the eternal Truth and immortality through their mighty movements.
Verse 5: The promptings of Ṛta, the insight of Ṛta, the supporters of all life—all the gods together perform their cosmic works.
Traditional commentaries emphasize the ritual aspect of fire-boring (arāṇi), while esoteric readings see 'Śuṣka' as the dry material plane from which the living spark of spiritual consciousness awakens.

In this final, expansive movement, Agni assumes his role as the divine priest (Hotṛ) seated intimately within the progeny of Manu—humanity. He is the master of infinite treasures, bestowing divine riches upon those who offer devotion and seek instruction from him. The seers describe how the divine powers, wise and free from delusion, unite their energies within their own bodies, longing for the spiritual seed of creation. Like devoted sons honoring their father, they delight in his sacred will and obey his supreme command. Finally, Agni opens the doors of abundance with his bounteous harvest, adorning the vault of heaven with stars as the true guardian and lord of our earthly home.
Verse 6: To him who offers worship to you, O Agni, or who seeks instruction from you, bestow rich and luminous treasures, O Knower of all.
Verse 7: The invoking priest is seated within the progeny of Manu, and indeed he is the master of all these spiritual riches.
Verse 8: Desiring the seed of divine creation within their own bodies, the wise and undeluded ones harmonize through their own focused wills.
Verse 9: Like sons delighting in their father's will, they rejoice in his mandate, heeding the swift commands of his authority.
Verse 10: Rich in nourishment, he flings open the doors of wealth, and as the master of the house, he decks the vault of heaven with stars.
Sāyaṇa interprets 'damūnāḥ' as the one who dwells intimately in the house of the sacrificer, while mystical commentators see it as the supreme Soul inhabiting the temple of the human body, turning night's canopy into a field of divine illumination.
