📖 Immersive narrative, word breakdowns, and spiritual context

In this single, potent mantra that concludes the ninety-ninth sūkta, the Ṛṣi turns to Agni with a deeply personal and urgent plea for safe passage. Life is envisioned as a turbulent, dangerous river filled with invisible currents, traps, and hostile forces that seek to diminish our spiritual and material wealth. To navigate these treacherous waters, the worshipper offers the pressed Soma, symbolizing the pure essence of delight and vital energy extracted from existence, to Agni, the knower of all births. The Ṛṣi asks Agni to act in two complementary ways: first, to consume and burn away the malice of those who wish us harm, neutralizing the inner and outer obstacles represented by arātīyat; and second, to ferry us safely across all difficulties, just as a sturdy boat carries travelers across a vast and swirling river. The image of the boat upon the river (nāvā iva sindhum) is one of the most enduring Vedic metaphors for divine protection and transit from darkness to light.

💭 Flowing Translation

Verse 1: Let us press the Soma for Jātavedas, who burns away the wealth of the hostile enemy; may this Agni carry us across all our difficulties, as a boat carries us across the river.

📝 Scholar's Reading Note

The direct translation focuses on Agni as a literal protector and destroyer of human foes, while traditional commentaries like Sāyaṇa explain 'vedaḥ' as the accumulated wealth or goods of the malicious. Sri Aurobindo and psychological interpreters see 'sindhu' as the ocean of worldly existence and 'duritā' as internal falsehoods and limitations that Agni helps us transcend.
